Nike Well Collective Run Coach, Dora Atim, is inspiring a new generation of runners and Black trail runners through Ultra Black Running - where marginalised people can feel safe and be seen. This year, we've seen a surge of interest in run clubs. On Google Trends, we are seeing breakout searches for 'Nike Run Club' and' Nike Run Club 10k Run', whilst on your TikTok FYP, it's hard to miss an increase in runners. Not only have run clubs helped create new fitness habits, but many people have also made life-long friends through them. There is clearly a growing interest in long runs, but what is it about run clubs that has suddenly appealed to us so much? And where did this surge in interest come from? We sit down with the founder of Ultra Black Running's, Atim, to find out more.

POPSUGAR: Where do you think this surge of interest in run clubs has come from?

Dora: I think interest has increased post lockdown, can you believe that was four years ago? The feelings of togetherness is something I feel we all crave and also coming together to run or take part in exercise is definitely more appealing nowadays as opposed to going on nights out and burning through money. The social element of run clubs also creates community and as humans, that's what we need and is also what makes the world a greater place.

POPSUGAR: When did you create the Ultra Black Running and what was your motivation for
creating it?

Dora: The motivation to start Ultra Black Running came from wanting more Black representation in the trail and outdoor space. In June 2020, the world came to a standstill and witnessed the tragic death of George Floyd. Prior to that there was also another sad loss of Ahmaud Aubrey who was murdered whilst being on a run. I had so many emotions and feelings about being someone who is Black and also runs.

"There is still work to be done in order to create that representation and visibility in order for the trail community to reflect how a trail running world should look like."

POPSUGAR:There is a lack of representation for Black women and gender-nonconforming people in trail running - why do you think that is? And what does Ultra Black Running do to tackle this?

Dora:The historical exclusion and discrimination that have been pervasive in the sport of running and outdoor activities in general contributes to the barriers that marginalised groups face today. As a result of this, it has caused a lack of awareness, which then affects the outreach efforts towards Black women and gender non-conforming people. As there has been some improvements that I have witnessed since Ultra Black Running's launch back in 2020, there is still work to be done in order to create that representation and visibility in order for the trail community to reflect how a trail running world should look, and Ultra Black will do everything to provide and nurture the community via many forms of get-togethers and the support with resource that is needed to thrive in this industry.

POPSUGAR: What do you love the most about trail running?

Dora: Trail running is often in a forest or on gravel roads along the coast. So, every step you take requires you to think about it. It's kind of like a new thrill as you embrace the unknown and find solace in the pure rawness of the outdoors and the beauty of it all. It's a fearless and exhilarating journey. I feel so free and in control of my body even though I'm often running off piste, and most probably lost.

POPSUGAR: What has running done for you - not just physically but mentally?

Dora: Oh my goodness, running is like my secret superpower! When I run, I feel so in
control with my life, sometimes, because on the flip-side marathon training can make it feel like my life is falling apart sometimes too. As much as this benefits me physically, mentally it does give me mental strength, peace and freedom.

POPSUGAR:Many people are seeking run clubs to make friends in adulthood - is friendship
also something you can get out of running in groups?

Dora: Joining run groups is an amazing way to make friends. Just think, you are forming relationships with people who have the same interests as you, that you could share together outside of the run groups. This also is a great way to give your non-running friends a rest, because I know my friends who don't run definitely need a break from me constantly talking about running.

"Trail running is like a new thrill as you embrace the unknown and find solace in the pure rawness of the outdoors and the beauty of it all. It's a fearless and exhilarating journey."

POPSUGAR: Did you start off running solo? If so, what changes has running with a group of Black women made for you?

Dora: When I first started running, I would always run alone late at night because I was embarrassed that people would see that I am a newbie (which I am sure so may can relate to). But the truth is, once you start to feel more confident that feeling will soon disappear. Running with a group has so many benefits but I also understand that if you are new to running it can be quite intimidating to join a group. There is always that nervousness that you will be 'stuck' at the back and often [it's] associated with struggle.

Running with a group of Black women, and women that I can relate to has helped in so many ways, I know during the summer of 2020 running with Black Women had never felt so important to me as it was my way of coming together and not having to worry about sharing my thoughts and feelings and them being misinterpreted. Also, let's be honest a couple of years ago, some run clubs you won't see as many people who are not Black, would often be one or two - so to run in a group of 10 plus Black Women, it feels wonderful.

POPSUGAR: In what ways does being part of the Nike Well Collective allow you to continue to engage and inform runners?

Dora: Being a part of the Nike Well Collective allows me to connect with other fitness and wellness professionals who work in different modalities, but the beauty is that we all have a common goal which is to inspire encourage and motivate others to think about their definitions of wellness. For example, breath work was something that I did not find interesting enough to dabble in, but with so many people who are a part of the Nike Well Collective, I've been taught how to make it relatable to my everyday living and have mini breath-work exercises that will also benefit my running. Education is key, but when someone can teach you how to make it readable to you is super special, and that what the Well Collective feels like, having access to multiple teachings, to live well.

POPSUGAR: Can you talk us through what your running routine normally looks like in a
week?

Dora: My running routine varies, I usually run three to four times a week mostly in the mornings as it
sets me up for a great day ahead, unless it is raining, which it usually always is because you know, London life. A lot of my running is done solo or with one or two friends who are local to me, and then any running events that I will be coaching or leading for the wider running community. My runs can be anything from 20 minutes to two hours depending on how I am feeling on the day.

"Running with a group of Black women, and women that I can relate to has helped in so many ways, I know during the summer of 2020 running with Black Women had never felt so important to me as it was my way of coming together."

POPSUGAR: Running gear must be a staple in your wardrobe, what Nike kit do you consider to be essential for runners?

Dora: Everything about running gear is essential for me, if I don't look good I do not feel
good. Those that know, know. However it is also important to have essentials that are
functional and will last a long time. To start, a good pair of running trainers like the Nike Invincible 3 Women's Road Running Shoes (£175) - I would say are essential. You need a pair that you can run in multiple times before thinking about investing multiple shoes for different kind of runs.

A good sports bra like the Nike Swoosh Medium Support (£40) is non-negotiable. This is the first thing I recommend to newer runners who wear bras. Without the right one, you actually become less efficient in your running as you may feel uncomfortable which will make you compromise form, or stop the run altogether which I have done in the past.

POPSUGAR: For those who want to start running or trail running but might feel intimidated, what are your tips?

Dora:Honestly just go for it! I know it is easier said than done but once you start, you won't regret it. Start small, and walk when it starts to feel challenging, or push yourself when it starts to feel challenging. Make a playlist, take pictures, slow it down and enjoy this different way of running.
