MLB's Miami Marlins Hire Kim Ng as General Manager
Kim Ng Makes History as the MLB's First Female and First Asian-American General Manager
Kim Ng has shattered the glass ceiling with a wood bat. On Friday, the Miami Marlins organisation announced Ng as the team's new general manager. Not only is she the first female GM in Major League Baseball, but she's also the first Asian-American GM, and she is beyond deserving of the title. She has more than 30 years of experience in the front offices of major league baseball organisations with the Chicago White Sox, New York Yankees, Los Angeles Dodgers, and, most recently, in the MLB's commissioner's office. Did we mention she has three World Series championships under her belt?
Ng shared a statement with fans on the team's Instagram and her excitement is palpable. "I entered Major League Baseball as an intern and, after decades of determination, it is the honour of my career to lead the Miami Marlins as their next general manager," she wrote. "When I got into this business, it seemed unlikely a woman would lead a Major League Baseball team, but I am dogged in the pursuit of my goals. My goal is now to bring championship baseball to Miami. I am both humbled and eager to continue building the winning culture our fans expect and deserve."
This is a huge feat for women in sports. MLB insider for ESPN Jeff Passan said it best: "Forget just baseball. A woman never has been the general manager of a major American professional sports team period until Kim Ng was hired by the Miami Marlins today. Their COO is Caroline O'Connor. The Marlins' three highest-ranking officials are two women and an ex-shortstop." Of course that ex-shortstop is Derek Jeter, the team's CEO and part owner. Congratulations to Ng and the entire organisation!
