Family Re-Create Journey's "Separate Ways" Music Video to Stave Off Boredom, and It's Incredible

Lovers of '80s music, prepare to be completely wowed, because a family from Maple Valley, WA, re-created Journey's iconic "Separate Ways" music video shot for shot while trying to make the most of self-isolation. Steven and Jana Heller put their own spin on the rock song with their children — Lily, 15, Jackson, 14, Asher, 12, and Violet, 9 — and it's safe to say Steve Perry would be impressed. Naturally, as soon as Steven shared their creation on Facebook, it instantly took off.

"It was all my wife's idea," Steven told POPSUGAR. "I was working in my home office and Jana sent a text from the bedroom next door saying, 'We need to remake a music video.' That sounded like a lot of work to me, but after she found the Journey music video we all got pretty excited about it. It was all really just an attempt to stave off the self-isolation boredom!"

As the family was stuck at home with nothing to do, the project didn't take as long as Steven initially thought. "Jana came up with that idea on Thursday. On Friday, I took the original video and cut it up into all its various shots to analyse it and do some preproduction," Steven explained. "We shot the whole thing on my iPhone on Saturday over eight to 10 hours, and then I edited it on Sunday in about four or five hours. All in all it came together pretty quickly."

Watch the version below until the end to see the full video comparison frame-by-frame, and good luck getting the tune out of your head for the rest of the day!
