Disney's first new movie of 2021, Raya and the Last Dragon, is finally here after being pushed off the release schedule in 2020! The beautifully animated movie, which features Disney's first Southeast Asian princess (voiced by Star Wars's Kelly Marie Tran), tells a story that centres on trust, teamwork, and coming together with those you differ from in pursuit of a greater good.

After Raya is semiresponsible for unleashing an ancient force of evil, the Druun — which was last seen 500 years prior when dragons and humans lived in harmony — she embarks on a journey with some unexpected friends to restore peace to the divided land of Kumandra. Her adventure is filled with fun scenes that your family will want to replay over and over, but that said, this movie is very action-packed, which may be a lot or younger or more sensitive viewers.

If you're planning on watching Raya and the Last Dragon with your kids — which you can do now with Premier Access on Disney+! — keep reading for the few things you may want to know before pressing play.

What to Know About Disney's Raya and the Last Dragon Before Watching With Kids

  1. There are lots of weapons, fight scenes, and depictions of violence and tension throughout the film. In addition to fist fights and sword fights, various weapons make appearances during the film's instances of violence. Additionally, the main characters are constantly in peril, narrowly escaping dangerous and precarious situations. Overall, the plot is fairly tense, action-packed, and fast-paced, which could be anxiety-inducing at times (but it's also superexciting and fun!).
  2. The Druun is pretty spooky and intimidating. The main threat in Raya and the Last Dragon is the Druun, an evil force that appears as a black fog riddled with what looks like purple electricity. It plagues the various lands of what was once Kumandra, turning its victims into stone as it travels. There are brief, less-scary Druun appearances in addition to longer, more intense scenes that could be frightening to some.
  3. Characters are continually turned by the Druun, and one character appears to die. Although, spoiler, no one actually dies throughout the course of the film, there are a lot of bleak moments in which characters are "turned" by the Druun. There's also one scene where it appears a main character dies following an injury and a gnarly fall off a waterside cliff, and an extremely dire situation featuring the good ol' Druun immediately follows. If your kids feel stressed about these events, you can assure them that while scary, it all turns out OK!
