I Tested Out Ashley Graham's Favourite Spray Shoe Protectant

White sneakers will never go out of style. From jeans and a T-shirt to a cute dress, these staple sneakers can go with almost every look. In fact, white shoes in general are timeless, whether it's stylish heels or a pair of pointy-toe boots. No matter how much I love white footwear, I tend to stay away because of how easily it can get ruined. But I changed my mind when I heard about the Jason Markk Repel spray ($17) from Ashley Graham.

I interviewed Graham about her current must haves and product obsessions, and she raved about her favourite sneakers, the Nike Dunk Highs. She let me in on a little secret about how she keeps her shoes in pristine condition. Graham told me to use Jason Markk Repel, explaining, "It keeps my sneakers white and clean and prevents them from getting scuffed up." With her stamp of approval, I was eager to test this out for myself, so I ordered it and got myself a pair of new sneakers.

What I Like About the Jason Markk Repel Spray:

The Jason Markk Repel spray is pretty easy to use. All you have to do is spray the thin, water-based solution all over the shoes of your choice without oversaturating them. The solution is supposed to form a durable, breathable barrier that repels liquids and stains. It's safe to use on a variety of materials, like leather, suede, nubuck, canvas, nylon, and more. Plus, the solution barely has a fragrance. One thing I appreciate about the Jason Markk Repel solution is the convenient spray bottle. The nozzle dispenses a fine mist that helps to form an even layer of solution on your shoe.

After I let them fully cure for 24 to 48 hours, I wore them all over New York City and even travelled with them. These sneakers have been through the wringer. We're talking downpours of rain, getting stepped on, splashes in muddy puddles, running through grass, tripping on the sidewalk and escalators, and, of course, a few spills. This pair has gone barhopping, grocery shopping, and wanderlusting through the LaGuardia and JFK airports. I've had these sneakers for about a month and a half, and they're still in decently pristine condition. There's a tiny bit of dullness and minor scuff marks, but those went away with an easy wipe-down. I'm genuinely shocked at how well the spray has preserved my shoes. By now, these sneakers would have been scuff central, but with the Jason Markk Repel spray, they're good as new.

What's Worth Noting About the Jason Markk Repel Spray

It's best to use this product on brand-new shoes to preserve their pristine condition. However, if you've got a pair that are freshly cleaned, just make sure they are completely dry before you spray the solution on them.

To ensure I got an even layer, I held each shoe up by my fingers and spun it around as I sprayed, as shown above. The directions state not to oversaturate the shoe with the solution. I put a paper towel down to collect the excess spray, then used that to apply the solution to other pairs.

Once the first layer of the Repel spray was applied and dried, I applied another layer on top. The directions say to allow the solution to dry completely for at least 24 hours to make sure it can properly cure and protect your shoes effectively. You can wear your shoes out and about, rain or shine, as long as they are completely dry and cured.

Although I noticed minimal scuff marks and the slightest bit of discoloration, most of it goes away easily if you wipe it down with a paper towel or, even better, a Magic Eraser.
