Charlotte Tilbury Teases New Product at London Fashion Week
Olivia Rubin's Autumn 2020 Makeup Look Used a New, Top-Secret Launch From Charlotte Tilbury
For her second London Fashion Week show, designer Olivia Rubin looked back to the 1980s, showing a collection full of power shoulders, vibrant patterns, and candy-coloured pumps with pointed toes. Unsurprisingly, there was an eighties-inspired beauty look to match, courtesy of makeup artist Sofia Schwarzkopf-Tilbury and hairstylist Zoë Irwin. But while the hair and makeup looked back to the era of excess, the products used to create the look were brand-spanking new for 2020.
It wouldn't be the '80s without big hair, which Irwin delivered in a way that felt glamorous and not overly referential. To create the nostalgic style, she used the new GHD Helios Dryer (£159), which launched just hours before the show. "It's so good!" she said excitedly backstage. "It feels like you're cheating on the original Air, because the Air is amazing, but the Helios is just so useful. It really helps sculpt and fix the hair in place, making it great for the hairline, which is especially important today."
Locking in volume and curl was key for this hairstyle, which featured a voluminous hair flip and big, bouncy curls. After spraying the roots with GHD Root Lift Spray (£14.50), Irwin blow-dried all the hair over to one side. "I'm starting quite low and blow-drying the hair up and over the top of the head, really making sure to add lift to the roots," she explained. Once the hair was sufficiently flipped — or "kicked over and cool" — she then went ahead and curled, pinning the curls in a "tong set" while they cooled. To finish, she brushed out and broke up the curls with her fingers so the hair looked tousled rather than frozen place (this is what made it not look too '80s) and added a few brightly-coloured hair grips over one ear. "We painted the hair grips to match the colours in the clothes," she added.
With bright matte foundation, electric blue eyeliner, draped blush, and fuchsia lipstick, Schwarzkopf-Tilbury certainly incorporated many '80s makeup elements into the look for the show, but she did so in a fresh and ultra-glamorous way. "We contoured with blush, so we used it on the apples of the cheeks, along the cheekbones, and up to the temples," she explained. But what was important is the kind of blush she used, which was a mix two shades of the Charlotte Tilbury Cheek to Chic (£30) formula: Love Glow and Love Is the Drug. "What's so nice about this blush is that it has a highlight through it, so it gives a bit of a golden glow on the cheeks," Schwarzkopf-Tilbury added. "It helps the overall look feel fresh, which is important since the foundation for the show is matte and full coverage."
Rubin knew she wanted blue on the eyes for her show, and it was up to Schwarzkopf-Tilbury to pick the perfect, complementary shade of pink for the lips. "On the lips, we're using the K.I.S.S.I.N.G. Lipstick in Velvet Underground and for the eyes, well ... it's not out yet. It's coming in a couple of weeks and we can't tell you the name but you're getting a sneak peek back here," she said.
