Hailey Bieber's Hairstylist Helped Me Re-Create Her Met Gala Look at Home

Watching last night's 2022 Met Gala red carpet was like seeing my Pinterest board come to life. There were so many epic beauty looks that stood out to me, but I especially loved seeing Hailey Bieber's classically chic slicked-back bun. Bieber is my forever fashion and beauty inspiration (I once slept with a humidifier for a week because I saw her do it), and after seeing her walk the red carpet, I knew I wanted to re-create her Met Gala hairstyle for myself.

To help, I got all of the details from Bieber's hairstylist, Bryce Scarlett, who shared exactly how to master the look at home. While I didn't have the exact products he used on hand, I chose items in my beauty stash that had similar properties. Here's how the whole process went.

On Bieber, Scarlett started out by towel-drying her hair and prepping it with KMS Addpower Strengthening Fluid ($22) . From there, he blow-dried her hair prior to styling, so I mimicked his actions and dried my hair after showering, and then I prepped it with the IGK No Limit Dry Volume and Thickening Spray ($31). From there, following the steps Scarlett used on Bieber's hair, I used a one-inch curling iron and wrapped my hair from the midshaft to the ends.

Next, following Scarlett's advice exactly, I sectioned out the top triangle of my hair, from the peak of each of my eyebrows to the height of my crown, and clipped it up at the top of my head. After that, I started brushing back the rest of my hair into a ponytail.

Scarlett says he focussed on lifting the eye area while doing this, so I followed suit and attempted to make my ponytail tight and lifted. After Bieber's hair was secured, Scarlett used the KMS Conscious Style Styling Putty ($25) to tame any flyaways. I opted to use theOuai Matte Pomade ($24) to keep everything in place. From there, I twisted the ponytail into a chignon and secured everything in place with textured hair pins to avoid slippage.

Once I secured the bun, I then took the remaining triangle of hair I clipped, parted it down the centre, and then brushed it back to incorporate it into the chignon. The last step was to use a light-hold hairspray and a mascara wand to secure any stray hairs in place and make sure the style would last.

Of Bieber's look, Scarlett tells POPSUGAR, "I wanted to pull her hair back in sections so as to create some very subtle volume in certain places, keeping a strong look without it feeling severe. Using a light-hold hairspray to secure it all was key to maintaining that volume."

The final look might not be as gorgeous as Bieber's (I mean, who can really compare?), but it was definitely a step in the right direction. Anna Wintour, if you're reading this, I wouldn't mind an invite to next year's Met Gala.
