As a South Asian American obsessed with all things beauty, I was ecstatic to find out about the launch of cosmetics company Kulfi Beauty — it's even named after one of my favourite South Asian desserts. However, it's more than the name; every part of this brand represents me. The founder, Priyanka Ganjoo, has experienced the same beauty struggles I have. The imagery, shade names, and packageing are playful and full of personality. The models look just like me and exude confidence and individuality. Its ethos of celebrating yourself makes me proud of my South Asian heritage.
The brand's first products are the Underlined Kajal Eyeliners, which Ganjoo created to "not only solve problems that many South Asians face, such as finding products that match our undertones, but also come from our point of view," she told POPSUGAR. Kajal has been used historically to ward off the evil eye, also known as nazar. It is an ancient form of protection, and for many South Asians, our introduction into the beauty world. While many brands have come out with their own takes on kajal eyeliner (and many parts of South Asia have their own, region-specific formulations when it comes to traditional kajal) Ganjoo says they are the first to release them in the US with a South Asian perspective.
I love that the eyeliners are infused with aloe vera and vitamin E, helping the product to glide on easily without tugging excessively at my lids. The texture is almost like a gel liner, where it's soft enough to pick up using an angled brush. Once it sets, the formula will dry down and settle to offer a smudge-proof, waterproof, long-lasting wear.
I also appreciated that I could experiment and go out of my comfort zone with the different colours. I was able to create a sharp wing when I wanted to create a classic look, or I could smudge the liner with a dense brush for a smoky effect — all with one kajal eyeliner. I even used the Underlined Kajal Eyeliners to draw on cute accents like stars, hearts, and complementary geometric lines and dots, which I tried my best to attempt. I wanted to put these kajal eyeliners (and my creativity) to the test, so keep reading to see what I loved about each shade.
Underlined Kajal Eyeliner in Nazar No More
Named after the traditional practice of applying kajal, the Underlined Kajal Eyeliner in Nazar No More ($20) is a highly pigmented, jet-black, matte shade that is a staple for almost every eye look. Whether you want a sharp, bold wing or a smouldering eye, use this shade to express yourself with nothing holding you back, including nazar.
Underlined Kajal Eyeliner in Tiger Queen
Go outside your comfort zone with the Underlined Kajal Eyeliner in Tiger Queen ($20). It's a gorgeous, matte, terracotta-rust shade that represents power and complements a wide variety of skin tones. Use it as a pop of colour or as a part of a warm-toned, fiery look. Tiger Queen is also the founder's favourite shade.
Underlined Kajal Eyeliner in Cheeky Chiku
The Underlined Kajal Eyeliner in Cheeky Chiku ($20) is named after the yummy chiku fruit native to South Asia. It's a staple matte brown shade that will give you a perfect natural, smouldering look.
Underlined Kajal Eyeliner in Purply Pataka
According to Priyanka Ganjoo, the Underlined Kajal Eyeliner in Purply Pataka ($20) took the longest time to develop to achieve that true, neutral mauve. Named after the Hindi word for fireworks, this shimmery, purply mauve shade works with both warm- and cool-toned looks. You can really unleash your creativity with this shade — swipe it all over your lid, colour block, or add a pop of colour.
Underlined Kajal Eyeliner in Rain Check
The Underlined Kajal Eyeliner in Rain Check ($20) is a stunning teal-blue colour that lets you play without wasting time. With a slight shimmer and bold colour payoff, Rain Check is my personal favourite. The royal blue colour makes a statement on it's own, and really makes the eyes pop!
Underlined Kajal Eyeliner Set
After playing around with the Underlined Kajal Eyeliner Set ($85), it easily became my new go-to, and it's something I would recommend for everyone. The highly pigmented kajal eyeliners lasted all day on my lash line and waterline, with no unwanted bleeding or smudging. As a contact lens wearer, most eyeliners that I have used in the past often stained my contacts and, as a result, ruined them. I was so impressed that the Underlined Kajal Eyeliners did not get on my contacts at all. The kajal eyeliners were also easy to remove at the end of the day with a gentle cleanser.
