Could Madonna Be Headlining Glastonbury? We've Just Got Another Hint

Tickets for Glastonbury Festival go on sale in early November, and rumours are swirling around who will take the coveted headline spots next year. And, if the speculation is to be believed, Glastonbury 2024 is shaping up to be one hell of an event with Madonna, the Spice Girls, and Taylor Swift's names being thrown in the mix.

On the back of Madonna kicking off her Celebration Tour in London on 14 Oct. — during which she welcomed five of her kids on stage as well as Julia Fox — the rumour mill has been in overdrive. Festival organiser Emily Eavis posted a photo on her Instagram from the show with the caption "She's back! Incredible", leading followers to believe she could be tapped up to headline the Pyramid Stage next year.

And Eavis fuelled the fire further by speaking on Annie Mac and Nick Grimshaw's "Sidetracked" podcast in October, revealing that one of the slots has been booked by a female. "2024 is still a little up in the air," the organiser said. "And I thought it was kind of taking shape and then last week I just got a call, and this is what happens if you wait a little longer, because quite often we'll be booked up from July. This year we're holding out for a little bit longer and last week I got a call from a really big American artist saying this person's around next year, and I was like oh my God, this is incredible, thank God we held the slot."

Plus, Eavis confirmed that the iconic legends slot has been taken by a female, too. And both are Somerset festival first-timers. Like Elton John, prior to 2023, Madonna has never performed at the festival despite being a music icon, so surely this is a big hint in her direction, no?

Then there's the Spice Girls rumour, so could this '90s girl group be in the mix? After Mel C played a solo DJ set at this year's festival, she told BBC Radio 6 Music that the whole group would be up for taking to the stage. "Like I said to the audience [on Saturday night], doing a couple of Spice Girls songs, 'a bit of a warm-up for next year?'" she said. "They're rehearsed, they know the words, they're ready. So, if I can drag the other girls along... I say 'drag' the other girls along - all of the Spice Girls would like to play Glasto, that is the truth. It's just getting it together, the timing being right." News of a Spice Girls reunion has also been growing, so could Glasto be the secret project they've been working on? We're keeping our fingers crossed.

And then there's Swift. Fans were recently treated to an announcement confirming that The Eras Tour will finally be landing on British soil next summer. Eagle-eyed fans were initially convinced that the star had a Glastonbury-shaped hole in the tour run, but she seemingly took this off the table when she announced additional dates next summer, ruling her out of the festival. A representative of Glastonbury Festival did not immediately respond to POPSUGAR's request for comment.

Back in 2020, the "Anti-Hero" singer was set to headline the ever-popular music festival, but was forced to pull out due to the pandemic. More recently, organiser Emily Eavis revealed to Variety in an interview last year: "I think we've got Taylor on board next time she's doing some touring", but this no longer seems the case.

Whether Madonna or the Spice Girls speculation ends up being true, they will be a welcome change to the all-male all-white headliners of Glastonbury 2023. The organisers came under criticism for choosing Arctic Monkeys, Guns N'Roses, and Elton John to take the coveted spot over the 2023 Glastonbury weekend, although Eavis told The Guardian that this was due to a "pipeline" problem in the industry and a previous woman headliner pulling out. Here's hoping the rumours are true and there's more representation for Glastonbury 2024 headliners.
