The unpopular/popular romance was a teen movie staple long before He's All That, and The DUFF continues the tradition with a self-aware twist. Bianca is horrified to discover that she's been designated the "DUFF" of her friend group: the one that is less popular and is seen as a way to get close to the actual popular friends. As she tries to shake this image, she strikes a deal with her childhood pal (and current football star) Wesley: she'll tutor him to pass a class if he'll help her with an anti-DUFF makeover.
