"Be yourself" is ultimately the mantra of movies like He's All That, and Dumplin' takes that theme and gives it a slight twist. To prove a point to her pageant-obsessed mom, Willowdean enters a pageant, expecting to be able to prove how messed-up and damageing pageants are. Though she does have a point, she also is surprised to find that the pageant world is a little different than she expected it to be.
