"Checkered" Hair Colour Trend For 2022

“Checkered” Hair Colour Is Trending For Spring

  • Hot on the heels of the "Cruella" hair-colour trend last summer comes "checkered" hair.
  • This colour-blocking hair treatment involves applying different shades of dye to form stripes.
  • The spring hair colour is perfect for anyone looking to make a big change in their look.

If you remember, last year's live-action release of "Cruella" inspired a hair-colour trend of the same name. Selena Gomez got on board with the striking look, and later, so did Kehlani and Gwen Stefani. This year, though the hype around the film has dissipated, there's a new equally bold hair-colour trend here to take its place: "checkered" hair.

"Colour-blocking and 'half-and-half' hair have been trending for a while," Linh Phan, hairstylist and Schwarzkopf Professional digital artist, tells POPSUGAR. "The checkered look is a new unique combination of the two that have been trending." Phan created the look on DJ Cray, and the final result went viral on social media shortly after. "It's very unique and edgy, that's why people love it."

Unlike "Cruella" hair, which involves colour-blocking black and white hair dye either horizontally or vertically on the head, checkered hair colour sees the hair dye forming stripes on the head and can incorporate other unconventional shades as well. This creates a very distinctive look and can be customised to fit the wearer.
