Amanda Gorman Reads Poem For Kids in PBS Animated Short

Inaugural Poet Amanda Gorman Reads Her Poem "Talking Gets Us There" in Animated Kids' Short

To help parents continue to have ongoing conversations about race and racism with their kids, PBS shared a new animated short featuring inaugural poet Amanda Gorman, who reads her original poem "Talking Gets Us There." In the video, the 22-year-old poet, who is releasing her first children's book later this year, shares that "writing poetry is my favourite way to use my own voice."

"It's normal to notice what makes us different because what makes us different is what makes each of us so special," begins the poem, which she wrote for the PBS KIDS Talk About: Race and Racism special. "But across time and place, people have been treated unfairly just because of their race. . . People of colour still experience racism today. So, it's up to all of us to say, 'Enough is enough.' To speak out with all our hearts, and that starts at home. Starts with asking questions about race when we're taught about it. Together, I know we can tackle racism. But first, we have to talk about it."

Watch the animated short and listen to Amanda's poem with your kids in the video above, and visit PBS for a number of other antiracism and Black history resources.
