Kristen Bell on Daughter Offering to Bury Grandfather

Kristen Bell Jokes About Her Daughter's Offer to Bury Her Grandfather by "the Side of the House"

Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard know that their parental honesty policy – whereby they made a commitment never to lie to their kids – is a bit controversial.

But in a recent interview on Late Night With Seth Meyers, she revealed a hidden benefit to the fact that her kids know there's no Santa and have been bluntly told that they will die.

"Because of that, our kids have adopted this very practical sense about the world," Kristen said of daughters, Lincoln, 6, and Delta, 5.

She then recounted how, recently, their grandfather died. When he was dying, Delta asked, "When Papa dies, are we going to come to Oregon with you?"

Kristen told her yes and was shocked at the little girl's followup question:

"OK, do you need me to bring my shovel? Because I have a garden set."

Kristen's response? "I said, 'Why would you pack your shovel, honey?' She goes, 'Well, I want to help bury him. Where do we do it? The side of the house or . . . ?"

Once she explained that you don't bury people on the side of houses because "that's not legal," she found her practicality and desire to help uplifting.

"She genuinely wanted to bury her grandfather, and I thought there's something weirdly, oddly beautiful about that," she said. "She's a younger member of the family contributing to an older member's peaceful passing on."

After a brief pause, she added: "Some people could say she's a sociopath. I'm not going down that road."
