From "You" to "Happy Valley", Here are the Best New TV Shows to Add to Your 2023 Watchlist

It's been a long seven year wait for fans of the Yorkshire-based crime drama, but finally "Happy Valley" returns for its third and final series. After series two ended with Ryan (now played by Rhys Connah) sending a letter to his father, Tommy Lee Royce (James Norton) who is serving life in prison, the drama picks up with the 16-year-old having maintained contact. Sergeant Catherine Cawood (Sarah Lancashire) is unaware of their relationship and is making plans for her retirement. Somehow we don't think it will be that simple. . .

"Happy Valley" airs weekly on Sundays at 9 p.m. on BBC One and BBC iPlayer, wit hthe final episode airing on 5 Feb.

After seven years away, the BBC are taking us back to the nation's favourite school, "Waterloo Road". In its ten seasons on air, the show became a cult classic, its schoolyard antics becoming the talk of real-life secondary schools across the UK.

In January 2023, the show will release its highly anticipated eleventh season, with returning original cast member, Adam Thomas, calling it "the best series yet". Alongside Thomas, who reprises his role as Donte Charles, Katie Griffiths and Angela Griffin also return as Chlo Charles and Kim Campbell respectively. Kym Marsh, Jo Coffey, and Vincent Jerome also join the cast.

The new revival season promises to tackle storylines including teen homelessness, racism, sexuality, and the cost of living crisis.

The whole series of "Waterloo Road" will be available to stream on BBC iPlayer on 3 Jan., as well as a traditional weekly release, airing on Tuesdays on BBC One.

Following the explosive events of the Season 3 finale, Joe Goldberg (Penn Badgley) has relocated again, this time to London, with a new identity, now as Professor Jonathan Moore. In the first teaser for "You" season 4, he says of his new persona, "I've gone through a bit of refinement upon crossing the pond." The new season will see our anti-hero attempt to better himself, whilst in the company of the wealthy and aristocratic.

Tati Gabrielle is set to reprise her role as Marienne, while a host of new names also join the cast. Among the new faces are Charlotte Ritchie ("Ghosts", "Fresh Meat"), Ed Speleers ("Downton Abbey"), Tilly Keeper ("Eastenders"), and Lukas Gage ("The White Lotus", "Euphoria").

As one of the most highly anticipated TV shows of 2023, fans will be glad to know that the series is split into two sections, beginning as soon as February.

"You" Season 4's first half will be available to stream on Netflix from 10 Feb., with the remaining episodes released on 10 March.

Find yourself missing the distinctly British superhero whimsy of "Misfits"? Well Disney+ have heard your cries, and are filling that void. This original show, "Extraordinary", airs at the end of January, and is set to be a healthy dose of fun to start the year right.

Set in a world where, at the age of 18, everybody receives a superpower, our protagonist Jen is now 25, and still waiting. Disney+ have described the series as "a fresh, innovative comedy about being young and finding your feet in a confusing world, when all you'll ever be is ordinary."

This new dark comedy comes from the producers of "Killing Eve" and stars up and coming talents such as Mairead Tyers ("Belfast"), Sofia Oxenham ("Poldark"), and Bilal Hasna. It also stars Siobhan McSweeney ("Derry Girls") as Jen's mum Mary.

"Extraordinary" airs on Disney+ from 25 Jan., 2023.

And just like that, "And Just Like That" is coming back for a second series. In 2021, Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon, and Kristin Davis were back to show us what the lives of their characters, now in their fifties, look like. The show updated its classic premise for a new age, introducing a nonbinary partner for Miranda, as well as dealing with a range of diverse topics including race, gender identity, and sexuality. And it still had all the style and glamour that its predecessor was known for.

Now, Carrie, Miranda, and Charlotte all return for more (albeit once again without the iconic Samantha). The show has been filming in New York since November 2022, with the official Instagram account for "And Just Like That" sharing a photo of Carrie in a wedding dress that fans immediately recognised from the first "Sex and the City" movie. Speculation as to what this means has been rife!

"And Just Like That" Season 2 will air on Sky Atlantic and NOW later in 2023.

Devi Vishwakumar (Maitreyi Ramakrishnan) has seemingly been through it all. Grief, love triangles, friend drama, family drama, and there's more of it to come. "Never Have I Ever" returns one last time, for its fourth and final season in 2023.

Mindy Kaling's coming-of-age comedy has found success since its debut in 2020, especially for its nuanced representation of South Asian women. Devi has had as many love interests as the show has had seasons, and that's set to continue with the introduction of another for season 4. Michael Cimino ("Love, Victor") joins the cast as the "smouldering bad boy" here to make Devi's senior year that much more interesting.

Given the way that season 3 ended, Devi seems more romantically entangled than ever. So whether you're Team Ben, Team Paxton, or Team whoever this new guy is, get excited for this final season.

"Never Have I Ever" Season 4 will be available to stream on Netflix later in 2023.

The "Only Murders in the Building" trio never can catch a break. They may have solved the murders of Tim Kono and Bunny, but now they have a third murder to solve. Season 2 ended with a dramatic twist, in which actor Ben Glenroy (a newly introduced Paul Rudd) was found dead on stage, with Charles (Steve Martin) looking like the prime suspect.

Our podcasters/detectives will have their work cut out for them with this case. Selena Gomez, Martin Short, and Martin will all return as the lead roles, with Rudd also set to play a big part. Joining the cast is Jesse Williams ("Greys Anatomy") as a documentarian with a little too much interest in the murder case.

Not much else is known at this time, but it's enough to reel viewers back to the Arconia for another mystery.

"Only Murders in the Building" returns to DIsney+ later in 2023 for its third season.

HBO's satirical family dramedy "Succession", will be airing its fourth season as part of the lineup for TV shows in 2023.

The end of Season 3 saw the Roy family upended after patriarch Logan (Brian Cox) found out that his children were planning a mutiny against him, leading him to consider a deal to sell Waystar Royco to a new buyer. The buyer in question is tech mogul Lukas Mattson, played by Alexander Skarsgaard. Skarsgaard's involvement in the show is very much set to continue into the fourth season of "Succession", with part of this season being filmed in Scandinavia.

Fans will be on the edge of their seats yet again, as star Kieran Culkin revealed, "It feels different. Which is great, it's a great different. It's not resting on its laurels. It's still very much the show, but it feels like it's going in a direction I did not anticipate."

"Succession" season 4 is expected to air in the Spring on Sky Atlantic and NOW.

Following the end of the FIFA World Cup, football fans will be glad to know that when the England team aren't on their screens, AFC Richmond will be!

Jason Sudeikis's heartfelt football comedy "Ted Lasso" filmed its third season earlier in 2022, with an expected release date of early 2023. Nothing has been announced yet, but fans can rest easy knowing that Sudeikis, as showrunner, has rewritten scripts to get everything perfect.

While it has not been confirmed by AppleTV+, it is expected that this third season may be the last. Star Brett Goldstein said in an interview with the Sunday Times, "We are writing it like that… It was planned as three."

The season is expected to dive into the origin stories of the characters we know and love, with all of the principal cast returning. It will also deal with the fallout of Nate (Nick Mohammad) leaving the team at the end of Season 2.

"Ted Lasso" Season 3 is expected to air on AppleTV+ in early 2023.

Rachel Brosnahan is back as "The Marvelous Mrs Maisel" one more time. From the creators of "Gilmore Girls", this hit comedy will be returning for a fifth and final season, expected to air later in 2023 on Amazon Prime Video.

The award-winning show follows Midge, a 1950s housewife who decides to pursue a career in stand-up comedy. This final season will see all our favourite characters returning, with cast such as Alex Borstein, Stephanie Hsu, Jane Lynch, and Tony Shalhoub all expected to reprise their roles.

Prime Video are yet to reveal further information about production, but all signs point to a release this year!

"The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel" Season 5 is expected to air on Amazon Prime Video later in 2023.

"Bridgerton" fans are getting spoiled when it comes to TV shows in 2023. As well as the upcoming third season of the period drama, fans will also get to see the origins of a fan favourite character in a new spin-off.

In the main show, we'll get to see long time friends Colin Bridgerton (Luke Newton) and Penelope Featherington (Nicola Coughlan) finally explore the romantic potential of their relationship. Fans over the globe love 'Polin', as the pair have been dubbed, and should be excited to see this dynamic realised on screen. Given that the series has diverted from the order of the books, little else is known about what the season may have in store for the other Bridgerton siblings.

"Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story" will also air in 2023, with the first teaser showing us a glimpse of a young version of the queen attempting to escape an arranged marriage. The spin-off stars India Amarteifio as the younger counterpart to Golda Roshuevel's character, who will also reprise her role.

"Bridgerton" Season 3 and "Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story" will both be released on Netflix later in 2023.

Lily Allen is set to make her television debut in new Sky Original series "Dreamland". Set in Margate in Kent, the family drama follows Allen as an estranged sister who makes her way home.

The show also stars Freema Agyeman ("New Amsterdam", "Sense8"), Kiell Smith-Boyce ("Ghosts"), Gabby Best ("Switch"), Olivier Award-Winner Frances Barber, and Sheila Reid ("Benidorm").

"Dreamland", named after the amusement park in which the show is set, is based on a 2018 short film written by Sharon Horgan ("Catastrophe"). The series is described as "a dark comedic exploration of multi-generational relationships, and their somewhat dysfunctional family dynamics".

"Dreamland" will air on Sky Comedy and NOW later in 2023.

The long-awaited HBO adaptation of the beloved video game series is finally here! "The Last of Us" is set in a post-apocalyptic United States, overrun by hostile humans and cannibalistic zombies. The iconic game follows a smuggler called Joel, as he helps escort a young girl, Ellie, through the dangers of this new world.

The TV Show adaptation arrives in 2023, with Pedro Pascal ("Game of Thrones", "The Mandalorian") and Bella Ramsay ("A Catherine Called Birdy") stepping into the roles of Joel and Ellie. Given how well Pascal has played a father figure to Baby Yoda on "The Mandalorian", fans were thrilled at the news of his casting.

"The Last of Us" will air on Sky Atlantic and NOW from 15 Jan., 2023.

Coined as a darker, sexier "Gilmore Girls" for a new generation, Netflix mother-daughter drama "Ginny & Georgia" returns with a second season in 2023.

The show follows 15 year old biracial teenager Ginny (Antonia Gentry), and her young mother Georgia (Brianne Howey) as they find themselves moving again for the 12th time in as many years. Over the course of the series, we saw Ginny deal with many of the usual teen coming-of-age trials, whilst we discovered more of Georgia's sordid past.

Given that 52 million households viewed the series in its first 28 days, fans will be thrilled to have the Miller ladies back in their lives.

"Ginny & Georgia" Season 2 will be available to watch on Netflix on 5 Jan. 2023.

Having just won a whopping five Children's and Family Emmys, "Heartstopper" is on a roll. The second season of the hit Netflix show wrapped filming in early December, with its arrival on the platform expected for 2023.

This adaptation of Alice Oseman's YA graphic novels has won over fans for its warm and realistic portrayal of LGBTQ+ experience, especially for teenagers. It's stars Joe Locke (Charlie) and Kit Connor (Nick) have shot to stardom overnight, even making the GQ Men of the Year list. Another breakout star from the show, Yasmine Finney, will be featuring in the "Doctor Who" 60th Anniversary special later in 2023 too.

The second season features a trip to Paris, and is sure to be even sweeter and more romantic than the first.

"Heartstopper" Season 2 is expected to air on Netflix later in 2023.

Dramatic thriller "Yellowjackets" is one of the many TV shows returning in 2023. The Emmy-nominated series follows a high school girls football team after their plane explodes and they are left to fend in the wilderness. The show utilises a parallel timeline format, showing the present day lives of the girls who survived, while the mysteries of their time on the island slowly reveal themselves. Its adult cast boasts names such as Christina Ricci and Melanie Lynskey, both of whom received critical acclaim for their roles.

In the shocking season 1 finale, characters' fates were revealed, there was a dramatic death, and new storylines were introduced in jaw-dropping cliffhangers. Season 2 should begin to answer some of the many questions viewers were left with. That being said, the show has already been greenlit for a third season, so expect many more cliffhangers. . .

"Yellowjackets" season 2 is released in the US on 24 March, 2023. It will be available to watch in the UK via Paramount+ shortly after.
