Based in postcolonial Rhodesia during the 1960s, Tsitsi Dangarembga's semiautobiographical novel, Nervous Conditions, follows a young woman who decides to leave her rural community behind in order to study at a missionary school, but while there, she slowly learns painful lessons about her role as a woman and the evils of colonisation.
