In her debut novel, Wench, Dolen Perkins-Valdez introduces Tawawa House, an Ohio retreat for the Southern white men who holiday there every Summer with their enslaved Black mistresses in the years preceding the Civil War, where everything runs smoothly until a new woman arrives and begins talk of rebelling against their masters.
